Davide Carnevale graduated in Literary Criticism and Comparative Literature in 2016 at Sapienza University of Rome, where he also obtained his Ph.D. in Italian Studies in 2021. He is the author of the monograph Narrare l'invasione: Traiettorie e rinnovamento del fantastico novecentesco (Peter Lang, 2022). He has dealt with the fantastic fiction of  Tommaso Landolfi and Adolfo Bioy Casares, as well as the transposition of fantastic narrative modes onto different forms of language. Such interests inspired his 2017 articles «“A Ghastly and Inappropriate Splendour”: the Fantastic in Dino Battaglia’s Comic Adaptation» and «“In My Restless Dreams, I See That Town”: A Narratological Perspective on the Fantastic City of Silent Hill». A linguistic approach informs the essay «La “parola fantastica”: logopoiesi, retoriche dell’indicibile e mostri verbali», published in the proceedings of the conference Parola, una nozione unica per una ricerca interdisciplinare (2019).  He has also written the introductions to the hardbound editions of Dino Battaglia's La mummia and Sergio Toppi's Il Collezionista (published by Nicola Pesce Editore).

Davide Carnevale's contribution to the project "The Foreign Gaze" will focus on the transnational and transcultural dimensions that characterizes several comics works. Following the line taken by Daniel-Henri Pageaux in studies such as De l'imagerie culturelle au mythe politique: Astérix le Gaulois, he will attempt, through the tools of imagology, to identify the ways in which the language of comics represents and conveys specific images of the Other and otherness. Particular attention will be devoted to the work of Italians Sergio Toppi and Hugo Pratt.
