Simone Brioni

Simone Brioni is an Associate Professor in the Department of English and Affiliate Faculty in the Departments of African Studies and Women’s Gender and Sexuality Studies at Stony Brook University. Simone co-directed and wrote the documentaries La quarta via. Mogadiscio Italia (2012; with/about Kaha Mohamed Aden), Aulò. Roma postcoloniale (2012; with/about Ribka Sibhatu) and Oltre i bordi (2023; with Ubah Cristina Ali Farah). He also wrote the documentary Maka (2023; with/about Geneviève Makaping). His monographs include The Somali Within: Language, Race and Belonging in ‘Minor’ Italian Literature (2015) and L’Italia, l’altrove Luoghi, spazi e attraversamenti nel cinema e nella letteratura sulla migrazione (2023). His contribution describes the process that led to the creation of an art volume with the provisional title Still Here which talks about director Suranga Katugampala's new film. The book includes cultural theory interventions and sections in which the transcultural practices of the film's makers are discussed. The intervention also discusses the interaction of texts with images and the type of relationship that the film has with the book.
