Ondaatje's fourth novel narrates the story of a forensic anthropologist that returns in her
motherland, Sri Lanka, in the Nineties, during the civil war, in order to investigate on a series
of political murders. The protagonist lives a conflict between his scientific objectivity, the
political pressions and the emotions provoked by the return in Sri Lanka. Anil has a
transcultural nature: she is born in Sri Lanka but raised abroad, she has adopted a male name,
she’s “occidentalized”, she’s a scientist and a spokeswoman of United Nations. Her figure
represents and hybrid of different cultures and transcends the conventional notions of identity,
social position and gender.
