Corps étranger is almost like a journey into Mona Hatoum's body. Using endoscopic techniques, images of the body's interior are captured and projected onto the floor within a cylindrical structure featuring two parallel openings. The projector meticulously maps out an enlarged depiction of the human anatomy, beginning from the external features like the eyes and skin surface, then delving deeper into the membranes and mucous membranes. Accompanied by the amplified rhythm of heartbeat and breath, Corpo étranger immerses the viewer on both a personal and physical level. Additionally, it resonates on a geographical level, drawing from the artist's own experience of exile from Lebanon during the civil war, and her subsequent resettlement in London, a displacement that severed her emotional ties. Presented as a foreign and disorienting presence, the fragmented body serves as a poignant symbol of the complex geography of Hatoum's life narrative and her perception of identity, perceived as transient and fragmented.
