The Western Wall, also known as the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem, is the remaining wall of the
Temple of Solomon. In the artwork titled The Western or Wailing Wall, Fabio Mauri reconstructs
it using suitcases of varying materials and sizes. By utilizing a pile of suitcases, the artist explores a
range of migration phenomena, territorial divisions, exile, and forced exodus. The artwork offers a
perspective that is not limited solely to the victims of the Holocaust. A text written by Mauri is an
integral part of the work and has been included with the installation since its initial exhibition at the
45th Venice Biennale in 1993.
