In an old apartment in Rome lives Jason Kinski, an eccentric English pianist; Shandurai, an African girl studying medicine at the University, lives with him and does the cleaning in exchange for a room. Jason, who spends his days at the piano giving music lessons, falls in love with her. The girl doesn't reciprocate his feelings, also because her husband is detained in Africa for political reasons. Jason then begins a sweet love siege, in the hope of being reciprocated sooner or later. Shandurai, after a confrontation in which Jason openly declares his love for her, tells him that if he is really willing to do anything for her, then she will release her husband. Knowing this, Jason decides to do something for Shandurai's husband and, after making contact with the African community of Rome, tries to raise the sum to free the girl's husband, by selling all the art and antiques that owns, including the prized piano, proving that his love surpasses even his passion for music. Finally, Shandurai receives a letter from her husband in which he informs her of his imminent release and that he will join her in Rome. With this film, Bertolucci wanted to tell the story of love as a siege, as an occupation of mental spaces, as an immigration into someone else's person.
