In Sartorius (his seventh novel) Glissant invents a people, the Batoutos. They are from an
imaginary archipelago in the hearth of the African continent, which is “invisible as nation”.
They have departed a long time ago from their territory in order to discover the world, in the
research of Éléné!, an utopia which resume the spaces and times in which peoples have
encountered themselves. The Batoutos are the model of an ideal creolization, of an errance
enracinée (a rooted wandering), which multiplies the thought of the territory ad neutralize the
thought of the journey as the conquer of the other. The narration of Batotous’ different stories
is functional to demonstrate the relationship principle which structures the world.
