The film is freely based on the novel of the same name published in 2009 by Elvira Dones, from which it derives the main themes and part of the setting. Hana is an Albanian orphan, who lives with a mountain man married and with a daughter named Lila, her age. In that context, the woman is forced to follow the strict rules of the Kanun, customary civil law, active among the Albanian mountaineers, who in the absence of sons, can push a woman to proclaim herself a man, behaving accordingly. Hana, having become Mark, will lead a life similar to that of a man, but when she arrives in Italy many years later, contact with a different culture will allow her to rediscover the buried Hana (Source: Wikipedia).
