As highlighted in numerous studies (Biondillo 2008, Cellamare 2020, etc.), the forms of living in the metropolitan context have undergone a drastic change following the dissolution of the semiotic boundaries of urban space and the consecutive deconstruction of the centre-periphery binomial . The city landscape, crossed by national and international migratory routes, finds itself experiencing an unprecedented transformative phase in which the gap between the wealthy class and the underclass, between bourgeois neighborhoods and working-class neighborhoods, seems to increasingly shift its boundaries to the point of confusing them and often cancel them. Therefore, the condition of marginality is no longer an exclusive prerogative of the extreme and liminal territories of the city, but also concerns the central areas, giving rise to "internal suburbs" (Petrillo 2018, 2020) which undermine the hierarchical logic between inside and outside so as to questioning the very validity of the "center and periphery" polarities in favor of a non-oppositional but complementary rearticulation of spaces. It is a semi-spatial mixture that proceeds hand in hand with a similar cultural contamination: the contact between multiple identities triggers the emergence of "third spaces", as Bhabha (1994) understood them, where we witness an integration between dissimilar cultures completely immune to hierarchies of value and clear demarcations. It is therefore possible to reread the unprecedented relationship between center and periphery in the light of a transcultural analysis: if it is now reductive to map urban geography in dichotomous and definitive terms, the same can be said for cultural subjectivities, drivers of interactive processes of mutual influence that intersect identity constructs in constant renegotiation. In a stratified and non-homogeneous living text such as the contemporary one, transculturality constitutes an "operational concept" (Sinopoli-Contarini 2023) essential for framing the novelties of a coexistence that removes the top-down system between native culture and foreign culture, central and peripheral. The panel proposes to reflect on the aforementioned socio-urban and transcultural dynamics within Italian fiction from the second half of the twentieth century onwards, with the aim of studying the convergence between metropolitan hybridization and cultural hybridization starting from the migratory phenomena of recent decades. Attention to purely formal data is also encouraged, demonstrating how the literary device can translate the circumstances mentioned into language. Consider, for example: the diffraction of authorial identity in multiple and rhizomatic diegetic instances; to cases of translingualism, pluristylism and crossover between genres; to the breaking down of the border between the center - the actual text - and the periphery - everything that pertains to the paratext, including title pages, prefaces and afterwords, interviews, etc.
